Athletics First, Swimming Last: How LA 2028 Flipped the Olympic Schedule

Short version: Los Angeles 2028 swapped the traditional Olympic running order. Track & field opens the Games in week one (July 15–24 at the LA Memorial Coliseum) and swimming closes them in week two (July 22–30 at SoFi Stadium). At every recent Summer Games — Paris, Tokyo, Rio — it was the other way around.

What the official schedule actually says

Per the official LA28 competition schedule (v2.0), the first athletics session is on Saturday, July 15 — Day 1 of competition — with the women’s and men’s 100m preliminaries and the first finals that same day. Track & field then runs daily through July 24, with the marathons on July 29–30. Swimming doesn’t start until Friday, July 22, and its finals run through the last day of the Games, July 30.

That gives each marquee sport its own week: gymnastics and track share week one, swimming anchors week two alongside track cycling and taekwondo. The two biggest Olympic sports never compete head-to-head for prime time.

Why it matters if you’re buying tickets

  • Week one (July 15–24): athletics at the Coliseum, artistic gymnastics at Crypto.com Arena (through July 25), judo, fencing, rugby sevens, surfing.
  • Week two (July 22–30): every swimming final at SoFi Stadium, track cycling at the Carson Velodrome, basketball finals July 29–30 at the Intuit Dome.
  • Sprint fans: the 100m finals land in the opening days — don’t plan a week-two trip expecting to see them.
  • One trip, both sports: July 22–24 is the only window where athletics and swimming overlap.
