How the new format works
- Six pools of four teams play round-robin rugby from October 1–17 across all seven host cities.
- The top two in each pool advance, joined by the four best third-placed teams — 16 teams into the knockouts.
- Round of 16 (October 23–24) — the first in World Cup history — in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
- Quarter-finals (October 30–31) at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.
- Semi-finals (November 5–6) and the final (November 13) at Stadium Australia, Sydney.

More pool upsets matter less — a big team can lose a pool match and still advance — but the new Round of 16 means one extra sudden-death weekend, and one extra chance to see a giant fall early. It also means knockout rugby in three different cities before the tournament even reaches Brisbane.
